Make Room for Independence

Make the next step manageable, match support to readiness, and return ownership to your child.

Building independence

Move from adult-led prompting toward child-owned action, checking readiness along the way.

Encourage a Manageable Attempt

Your child wants to try something but feels uncertain about the first step.

Try this

“We can look at it together, choose one part to try, and see what you learn.”

How to use it

Use three actions to support a manageable attempt: assess the task, accompany the attempt, and anchor a useful experience to remember.

  1. Assess: explore what is involved and choose a manageable first attempt.
  2. Accompany: agree on the support they want, including where you will be available.
  3. Anchor: afterward, notice a useful strategy or discovery they can remember.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“I'll stay nearby while you order your snack. We can practice the words first.”

Ages 13–18

“Want to rehearse the opening of the call? You'll make the call, and I'll be here afterward.”

Watch out for

Do not promise that the attempt will succeed or use a previous success to dismiss a new worry.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Make the attempt smaller or practice one part together. Stopping can give information about support needed.
