Building independence

Move from adult-led prompting toward child-owned action, checking readiness along the way.

Name the Smallest Clear Action

A broad instruction such as 'get organized' is not helping your child start.

Try this

“Put the books from the floor onto this shelf.”

How to use it

Name the object, action, and finish point. Break a large task into one doable instruction at a time.

  1. Choose the first visible action.
  2. Name what to act on and where it goes.
  3. Show or explain the finish point.
  4. Check understanding and whether practical help is needed.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“Put these markers into the cup.”

Ages 13–18

“Open the assignment and mark which section is due tomorrow.”

Watch out for

A precise request should make the task clearer, not turn every movement into something you supervise.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Demonstrate the first part or reduce the task further.
