Check Readiness for Independence

You are deciding how much responsibility to hand over.

Try this

“What can you manage already, and where would help be useful?”

How to use it

Readiness is specific to a task and its risks. Ask about skills, concerns, and a backup plan rather than testing a child's general 'psychological ability.'

  1. Choose one responsibility.
  2. Check skills and what they have already practiced.
  3. Ask about concerns without steering the answer.
  4. Agree on support, a safety boundary, and a way to ask for help.
  5. Try an appropriate small transfer and review it.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“Want to pack the bag while I check the list with you?”

Ages 13–18

“If the bus is canceled, what will you do and who can you contact?”

Watch out for

Fear is something they can name, not a word you need to avoid. Age alone does not establish readiness.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Return to practicing the missing part rather than withdrawing all responsibility.
