A family moment

A warm question starts to feel like an interview

Your child comes home and answers “How was school?” with “Fine.” You try again: “What did you do? Who did you sit with? Did the teacher say anything?” The answers get shorter.

The problem may not be the relationship. Your child may need time to land, a smaller question, or proof that one answer will not trigger five more.

What is happening

Questions require timing, memory, and emotional energy. A broad question asks a child to summarize hours of experience while also guessing what the parent wants to know.

Listening is not silent waiting for your turn. It means reflecting a small piece, checking your understanding, and asking what kind of help is wanted before you solve.
