Share Your Appreciation

You want to tell your child how a thoughtful action affected you.

Try this

“You brought me some water while I was working. I appreciated that.”

How to use it

A warm response can include your own feeling while keeping the child's action specific. Your child does not have to keep you happy or repeat the action for approval.

  1. Name the action rather than a trait.
  2. Say briefly what you appreciated or enjoyed.
  3. Let the moment end without adding a duty or another request.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“You saved me a place beside you. I enjoyed sitting together.”

Ages 13–18

“Thanks for letting me know you got there. I appreciated the update.”

Watch out for

Avoid 'You make me happy when you're good' or language that makes your mood the child's responsibility.

If it doesn't fit this moment

A simple “Thanks, I appreciated that” may fit better than a longer emotional explanation.
