Explore the Choice Behind Success

Your child wants to talk about something they did and you want to help them reflect.

Try this

“What helped you get through the hardest part?”

How to use it

Use one of these five questions to explore a choice or strategy. The questions invite reflection; they are not a quiz or a way to assign a permanent character label.

  1. How did you approach it?
  2. Which part was hardest?
  3. What are you pleased with?
  4. Is there anything you might use again?
  5. What would you tell someone trying something similar?

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“When the tower fell, what helped you try again?”

Ages 13–18

“Which part of preparing for that conversation would you use again?”

Watch out for

Ask one question at a time. A child who is enjoying a success does not need to analyze every part of it.

If it doesn't fit this moment

“You don't have to explain it. I'm glad you got to enjoy that.”
