Notice Action, Process, and Experience
You want to say more than 'good job' without focusing only on the result.
Try this
Choose one angle: what they did, how they approached it, or what they discovered.
How to use it
These three angles offer different ways to notice an ordinary moment. Use the one that fits; you do not need to cover all three.
- Action: describe the useful behavior you observed.
- Process: notice a strategy, a revision, or a return after difficulty.
- Experience: leave room for your child to say what the activity was like.
| Angle | Possible opening |
|---|---|
| Action | I noticed you… |
| Process | You tried… when… |
| Experience | What was that part like for you? |
What it can sound like
These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.
“You stopped and checked which piece would fit.”
“You rewrote that section after getting feedback. What do you think of it now?”
Watch out for
Do not praise effort you did not see or insist that a disappointing result should feel good.
If it doesn't fit this moment
Stick to a short factual observation: “I noticed you came back to it.”
