Choose a Way to Connect
A direct conversation is not the best fit for this moment.
Try this
Offer a shared activity, a story, a walk, or quiet company as well as talking.
How to use it
Connection can happen through play, shared tasks, reading, conversation, and ordinary company. Choose by your child's preference and the moment rather than rigid age windows.
- Notice the energy and time you both have.
- Offer one or two accessible ways to be together.
- Let your child choose or decline where possible.
- Keep the activity free of a hidden lesson or questioning agenda.
| Way to connect | Possible invitation |
|---|---|
| Play or making | Want to show me how you do that? |
| Story or reading | Shall we read a little together? |
| Shared task | Want company while we make this? |
| Quiet presence | We can sit together without talking. |
What it can sound like
These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.
“Want to build something together or read a few pages?”
“I'm making food. You're welcome to join me—no need for a big conversation.”
Watch out for
An activity is not a workaround for forcing a disclosure. Adapt for sensory, physical, and communication needs.
If it doesn't fit this moment
Offer a smaller opening another time and keep ordinary warmth available.
