Talk About Learning, One Question at a Time

Your child wants help with schoolwork or a learning difficulty.

Try this

“Which part is getting in the way right now?”

How to use it

Choose a learning-conversation prompt that fits the moment. Use the ten prompts as options across time, not ten questions to ask in one sitting.

  1. Find the hardest part.
  2. Acknowledge the experience.
  3. Explore one possible obstacle.
  4. Ask what approach they might try.
  5. Check why that approach seems useful.
  6. Discuss what it could change.
  7. Agree on help and a next action.
  8. Notice a strategy or return to the task.
  9. Acknowledge the work without overstating it.
  10. Ask whether they want to mark a milestone.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“Is the hard part reading the question or figuring out what to do?”

Ages 13–18

“Do you want to compare two approaches, or first ask the teacher what is required?”

Watch out for

Do not interrogate, promise rewards to end the discomfort, or treat every school problem as a lack of effort.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Pause the questions. Clarify the assignment with school or identify another practical support.
