Be Present Over Time

Build a pattern of ordinary attention that fits your child's changing needs and your family's capacity.

Time together

Start with your own attention, add warmth and limits, build a rhythm, and adapt it as your child grows.

1. Your own attention

2. What any caregiver can offer

3. Your family's rhythm

Adapt Your Presence as They Grow

Your child's preferences for time together are changing.

Try this

“What kind of time together would feel good to you now?”

How to use it

For school-age children, shared activities and practical school support may fit. Teens may prefer greater privacy and less direct company. Ask rather than assuming the age band tells you their preference.

  1. Notice what kind of contact your child welcomes.
  2. Offer an accessible activity or practical support.
  3. Adjust how close or involved you are while keeping care available.
  4. Review the rhythm when needs or circumstances change.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“Want me to join the game, help set it up, or watch?”

Ages 13–18

“Would you rather walk together or have me nearby while you work?”

Watch out for

Growing independence does not remove the need for support. Adapt for development, disability, stress, and the actual task.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Offer something smaller or at another time, and ask whether there is a practical barrier.
