Work Through a Correction
An issue needs a fuller conversation about impact, repair, and what happens next.
Try this
“Let's look at what happened and decide what needs to change.”
How to use it
These seven steps organize a calm conversation. You can split them across more than one talk rather than work through a long script.
- Prepare: choose a private time and clarify the issue.
- Describe the facts without judging the child.
- Hear their account and correct any misunderstanding.
- Explain the impact and the boundary.
- Work out a specific repair or next action.
- Express care while keeping the limit clear.
- Follow through on the agreement and review obstacles.
What it can sound like
These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.
“The book got torn. Tell me what happened, then we can work out how to repair it.”
“You missed the agreed check-in. I want to hear what happened and make a workable plan.”
Watch out for
Listening does not mean demanding a confession. Keep any consequence proportionate and connected to the issue.
If it doesn't fit this moment
Pause the debate, keep the immediate boundary, and return when both of you can discuss a next step.
