Turn Nagging into an Observation

You keep repeating complaints about the same behavior.

Try this

“I noticed the wet towel on the bed. The bedding is getting damp.”

How to use it

Replace a character judgment with an observable behavior and its practical effect. If a request is needed, state it plainly after the observation.

  1. Start with 'I noticed' and a specific fact.
  2. Describe the direct effect without predicting a disastrous future.
  3. Add one clear request if needed, then allow time to respond.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“The blocks are across the doorway. Put them in the box so we can walk through.”

Ages 13–18

“The dishes are still on the desk. Please bring them down before dinner.”

Watch out for

Avoid 'always,' 'never,' sarcasm, and an observation that is really an accusation.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Check whether the request was understood and doable before repeating it more loudly.
