Write from Your Senses

You want a short personal pause before returning to family life.

Try this

Write one thing you can see or hear in this moment.

How to use it

Use sensory details as optional writing prompts. This is a personal attention exercise, not a treatment or a requirement to use every sense.

  1. Choose a comfortable, safe place.
  2. Write what you notice through any available senses.
  3. Use concrete details rather than trying to produce a good piece of writing.
  4. Stop when you wish and choose one small next action.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

For your own preparation: “I can see a stripe of light on the table. I can hear footsteps outside.”

Ages 13–18

For your own preparation: “I can feel the chair supporting me. I'm going to finish this sentence before returning to the conversation.”

Watch out for

The examples are for the parent at either age band. Skip any sense that is unavailable or uncomfortable; you do not need food, scent, music, or touch to do this.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Stop writing. A quiet pause, movement, or another form of support may fit better.
