Stay Available Without Steering

Your child is making a decision and you want to support them without choosing for them.

Try this

“Would you like help comparing options, or some time to think?”

How to use it

Offer specific help and steady care without promising an outcome or making agreement the price of support.

  1. Ask which part, if any, needs help.
  2. Offer information or practical support you can provide.
  3. Leave space for their own view and timing within any real deadline.
  4. State any boundary honestly.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“You can try the activity first, then tell me what you think.”

Ages 13–18

“I can help you check the deadline. The choice between these options is yours.”

Watch out for

Avoid 'I know you'll succeed' when the outcome is uncertain, and 'I support you' followed by pressure.

If it doesn't fit this moment

“I may have given too much advice. I'll step back; let me know which part would help.”
