Help Two People Pause a Conflict

You are the calmer adult nearby while another caregiver and child are arguing.

Try this

“Let's pause. I can stay here while we give each other some space.”

How to use it

Help stop the escalation without declaring one person's anger justified or asking a child to manage an adult. Address the issue later, with both perspectives heard.

  1. Check safety and stop threats or harm.
  2. Offer a practical break to each person.
  3. Acknowledge the child's experience without excusing harmful adult behavior.
  4. Help arrange a calmer return to the actual issue.
  5. Keep adult disagreements about parenting away from the child.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“I'm here. Let's move somewhere quiet while the adults sort out what happens next.”

Ages 13–18

“You don't have to settle this now. I can help us take a break and return to the boundary later.”

Watch out for

Do not require loyalty to a caregiver or tell a child to accept shouting because the adult 'means well.'

If it doesn't fit this moment

Prioritize safety and appropriate outside help rather than trying to mediate ongoing intimidation or violence.
