Check Your Support Capacity
You are about to offer help that may stretch your time, money, or energy.
Try this
“What is the smallest useful support I can offer and sustain?”
How to use it
Useful help needs to fit your child's needs and your real resources. A clear limit is more dependable than an offer you cannot keep.
- Check whether the support is needed and wanted.
- Consider the time, cost, and effect on other responsibilities.
- Look for a smaller or shared way to help.
- State what you can offer and what stays with your child.
- Review whether the arrangement is workable.
What it can sound like
These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.
“I can help you sort the first few pieces. Then I'll cook while you continue.”
“I can drive you on Tuesday. For the other days, let's check the bus route.”
Watch out for
Guilt alone is not a good reason to overcommit. Adjust support for actual needs rather than demanding identical treatment.
If it doesn't fit this moment
“I offered more than I can manage. Let's make a smaller plan I can follow through on.”
