Repair After an Adult Argument

Your child heard or saw adults arguing and needs a clear acknowledgment.

Try this

“That argument was not your fault. It is our responsibility to handle the disagreement safely.”

How to use it

Own the adult behavior, explain only what your child needs to know, and make a change they can see. Reassurance needs follow-through.

  1. Wait until you can speak calmly and check your child's immediate safety.
  2. Say clearly that the child did not cause the argument.
  3. Acknowledge what they saw or heard without asking them to take sides.
  4. Explain what you will do differently.
  5. Offer company and follow through; do not stage a reconciliation or promise one that is not real.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“The shouting was scary. It wasn't your job to stop it. I'm here with you now.”

Ages 13–18

“You shouldn't have been put in the middle. We'll discuss the issue privately and keep you out of it.”

Watch out for

Threats, intimidation, violence, or recurring unsafe conflict need safety and qualified support. A repair script cannot resolve them.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Allow a child to stay upset or ask for space. Show the promised change rather than asking for forgiveness.
