Notice What's Useful

Your child is dismissing a strategy that is actually helping them with a task.

Try this

“That drawing helped you keep track of the steps.”

How to use it

Point out a practical value in what your child did. You can appreciate a useful strategy without turning every difficulty into a positive lesson.

  1. Identify an actual benefit, effort, or workable strategy.
  2. Describe it without exaggerating.
  3. Ask whether they want to keep using it or change something.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“Counting on your fingers helped you check the total.”

Ages 13–18

“Asking for the instructions in writing gave you something to refer back to.”

Watch out for

Do not reframe harm, exclusion, or a painful experience as something they should feel grateful for.

If it doesn't fit this moment

“You can still dislike the task. I was noticing the part that helped.”
