Make Room for a Difficult Feeling
Your child feels embarrassed, worried, or alone in a difficult experience.
Try this
“I can understand why that felt difficult. You don't have to handle it alone.”
How to use it
Acknowledge their experience without declaring that everyone feels the same way or that the problem is small.
- Reflect what they have actually told you.
- Make room for the feeling without rushing to remove it.
- Ask whether they want company, practical help, or another time to talk.
What it can sound like
These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.
“Trying a new group can feel uncertain. I'll come with you for the first part.”
“Not knowing what comes next sounds stressful. We can look at one option together.”
Watch out for
Avoid 'Everyone goes through it' when it dismisses a specific problem. Persistent distress deserves further support.
If it doesn't fit this moment
“I don't know exactly what this is like for you. I'm willing to listen.”
