Make a Clear Request

A behavior needs to change now and a long conversation would get in the way.

Try this

“Please walk beside me until we're away from the road.”

How to use it

Choose a short request that explains the action and, when useful, the reason. Safety comes first; you can talk about feelings later.

  1. State the concrete action you need.
  2. Add a brief reason or practical benefit if it helps.
  3. Offer an acceptable alternative when one is available.
  4. Check that the task is possible and follow through calmly.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“Keep the scissors on the table. I'll bring paper over here.”

Ages 13–18

“Please turn the sound down so I can finish this call. Headphones are another option.”

Watch out for

Do not use affection, food, or the promise of future time together as leverage.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Show the first action or offer practical help. If there is immediate danger, act to keep people safe.
