Find Practical Help

You want to help but do not yet know where to find the information or resources.

Try this

“What is missing, and who could help us find it?”

How to use it

Separate the resource gap from the whole problem. Help might be information, equipment, transport, a skill demonstration, or an appropriate person.

  1. Name the next task rather than trying to solve everything.
  2. List the information, materials, time, or support it requires.
  3. Identify someone or somewhere that can provide one missing resource.
  4. Check availability, cost, and whether your child wants that help.
  5. Choose one realistic request.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“We need to know what to bring. Let's ask the activity leader.”

Ages 13–18

“Would the school counselor help you compare the application requirements?”

Watch out for

Avoid sharing your child's private situation widely or comparing them with another family's outcome.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Shrink the next task or try another appropriate contact rather than promising a resource you cannot get.
