Connect Through Their Interests

You want an opening for conversation beyond schoolwork or rules.

Try this

“Would you show me the part of that game you like?”

How to use it

Learn a little about something your child enjoys, with their permission. Interest is an opening for contact, not a way to gain access to private information.

  1. Notice a book, game, activity, or topic they return to.
  2. Ask whether they would like to show you one part.
  3. Let them explain without immediately judging or teaching.
  4. Remember one detail and return to it naturally.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“Which creature in your drawing should I meet first?”

Ages 13–18

“You mentioned that artist. Is there one song you'd recommend?”

Watch out for

Do not pretend to share an interest, insult someone to gain approval, or inspect their messages.

If it doesn't fit this moment

“No problem. If you ever want to show me, I'd like that.”
