Choose Which Family Patterns to Keep
You hear yourself repeating words or reactions you grew up with.
Try this
“This is a familiar reaction. What do I want to keep, and what do I want to do differently?”
How to use it
Reflect on care, behavior, expectations, stress, and beliefs in your family history. You can choose a different response without having to explain everything about the past.
- Recall how care was shown.
- Notice familiar words, gestures, or conflict habits.
- Look at how expectations were communicated.
- Consider what happened under stress.
- Identify one belief you want to keep or revise and one action to practice.
What it can sound like
These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.
“I was about to say 'Stop making a fuss.' Let me try again: what is bothering you?”
“I grew up with little privacy. I want us to be clearer about your space and our safety responsibilities.”
Watch out for
Avoid blaming a whole generation or treating this as trauma treatment. Stop if reflection feels overwhelming.
If it doesn't fit this moment
Work only with the present phrase or action. A trusted adult or qualified professional may help with deeper concerns.
