Check Your Tone and Presence

Your words sound reasonable to you but the conversation feels tense.

Try this

Slow your pace, soften the volume, and check whether your posture leaves room for a response.

How to use it

Look at your words, tone, and actions together. You do not need a fixed percentage formula or a perfectly calm expression.

  1. Notice your volume, pace, and whether you are interrupting.
  2. Choose a comfortable distance; do not block the exit or demand eye contact.
  3. Check that the words and your follow-through match.
  4. Offer quiet company or welcome touch only if wanted.

What it can sound like

These are illustrative examples. Adjust the words to your family and your child's needs.

Ages 6–12

“I'm going to sit over here so we can talk without shouting.”

Ages 13–18

“My tone was sharper than I intended. Let me say that again.”

Watch out for

Do not label a worried or tired parent as harmful. Make one useful adjustment; hugs and eye contact are optional.

If it doesn't fit this moment

Pause and return later rather than trying to perform calm while continuing an argument.
